Am I old fashioned?

Read in today’s newspaper “Increase in sale of emergency pills. Doctors say that easy availability of emergency pills has led to an increased carelessness towards safe sex, even leading to more abortions”.

And then read yesterday “99 cases reported of swine flu and people are walking with masks on their faces. But there are lakhs of cases of AIDS and still people are hesitant to use condom”.

Both these items made my dormant mind to come back to life.

The so called magic pills --I pills and Unwanted 72 pills which are easily available at any chemist are meant for rape victims to save them from getting victimized because of no fault of theirs or for married couples who want to plan their families and thus help in controlling the population of the country.

I don’t think these pills are meant for immature teenagers who are still coming in grips with their sexuality and increasing demands of their growing body.

We hear of so many cases of abortions of unmarried girls ( a survey conducted in Mumbai during Navratri days revealed that cases of abortions suddnely shoot up after navratris)

With the easy availability of these so called magic pills unmarried girls and boys will not think twice before indulging in premarital sex.

The sudden panic of finding oneself pregnant after a quick session of sexual satisfaction has just vanished from the minds of over enthusiastic, over stimulated young couples. There will be no moral restrain on budding minds, no fear of society, no dread of parental discipline.

Moreover the blooming young boys will not take precautions and will easily fall prey to much dreaded HIV syndrome. (Why should they bother about any repercussions on the girls, it is not their headache now. The girls can easily pop up a pill and all tension is over). Even the girls are moving on the same wave length. Gone are the days of panic of finding oneself burdened with results of temporary physical pleasures? The days of parental confrontations and explanations have flown away.

Live in relations, mixing with members of opposite sex, easy access to secluded areas all are contributory factors in continuously decreasing values.

I may be sounding old fashioned and many of my blogging buddies may pass my post as OH! It is generation gap. She doesnt understand the present day, fast moving , savvy youngsters.

But is it really that?

Has the concept of society and parents permission (in the form of marriage) before enjoying the physical pleasures becomes obsolete?

Have the satisfaction of carnal desires superseded the moral values of today’s generation?

what kind of character building traits will the so called modern youth pass on to their progeny?

i absolutely echo your concern.awareness is much more necessary, and grave dangers that lurk with giving into such instant gratifications. I feel its for us to educate our children and its high time that we stop treating sex as a taboo. cheers

Hmm.

I dont know what to say.
If I was in any other profession I'd agree with you.

but, truthfully,
after seeing a lot, and hearing a lot

the simple conclusion I can come up with is

that if they dont have the pill, they'll just go by the will ;)

its not a new thing. I wish it was. but teenage sex is something no one can deny and no one can stop.

in such cases. I'd be gladder that there are things like pills and condoms. at least thats lesser teenage pregnancies.

also, 2 suggestions.

1. please take out word verification from your comment form.

2. it'd be great if instead of making a separate column for your archive you could just cram it down on the 2nd one where you have space.
golden rule for a blog page is :
no matter how huge the length is, never compromise with the width of the post.
and yours is a bit too narrow.

if course, you can totally call me old fashioned in that ;)

whoaaa babes...very bold post i must say

i am pretty much in agreement to what u say...
not sure about the parental go-signal...because that's a culture not prevalent in most countries...
but moreover..its the self maturity and values that must put a restrain on r actions...

and those are definitely going down the drain

Hmm, going by the comments of others I may sound like I am condoning "immoral behaviour", however, I feel parents need to understand the younger generation and accept the fact that more and more young people are sexually active these days. Instead of preaching mnorals we need to talk more openly about sexually transmitted diseases and the hazards of teen pregnancies.
I do not think there is any thing wrong in young people having sex but yes, maybe there should be an age limit on consensual sex.

Anjuuu,1st of all,i would request you to stop considering you as old-fashioned..it has echoed in many a posts of urs..you are not..like me,many have their views resonating with yours in most of the topics..
regarding this post,i'm from that part of the country where all those highly modern and immoral life havent encroached yet..still,when my so-called-modern friends express their views on such stuffs on a decadent tone,it really brings up some kind of an ill feeling..sex is something we preserve for the one and only one who we tie the seven knots with..not something to share with every trespasser..and legalising all those live-in relationships will only serve in aggravating the already grave situation..

I'm not sure morality can be considered a "fashion". Nor do I think "responsibility" has ever gone out of style.

It's great to see a voice like yours speaking up.

Sounding moral and sensible is not 'old-fashioned', Anju.
So here's the answer to the question you put up in the title.: Hell no.
:)

I agree with everything you have to say.

Sense- should prevail. Forget about the physical after effects, why do these people ignore the emotional trauma of all these.. it will hit back straight in thier face someday.

Wonderful post and here is one more follower!! ;)

You are right...lack of awareness I completely agree is not acceptable.

I may be going off-track here, but with all due respect, I don't understand why morality & character are related to one's sexual relationships. Does marriage put a stamp of good morals & character on a person, along with the social permission for having sex? I agree that, such pills are giving an easy way out for today's youth, and taking responsibility for your actions is being shrugged away, but I do not agree that, just because somebody indulges into this before marriage, they are also people with no morals & bad characters...

Please correct me if I am wrong, I have seen nothing of this world compared to you to be questioning you, I am just trying to point out another POV....

Shruti ,Thanx for stopping by my blog and giving your valuable comments. coming to your question Every one has their own point of view. I don't say that you are wrong. May be the only reason i wrote this post was that deep inside me is still embedded that old school of thought where sex before marriage was considered a taboo ( Old habits die hard.;=) )
When it comes to our own children ( whether old fashioned or up with the times and young generation ), our parental feelings and responsibilities takes precedence over new values and we become little rigid in our thinking and values.
Coming to my post my main concern was for girls and boys who are still in budding stage and who are not aware of the repercussions of such acts. There is nothing wrong if both the partners are mature and are responsible enough for their acts.

Very true very true !!
I so dread to imagine the fact that people (read males) might be carrying these emergency pills with them now rather than condoms! The increase in STD's would be worth a note !! Ban these pills, I say !!
I so agree with the fact that people who are in their 20's would always ignore these small things making the older generation think twice before giving an advice but then there are people like me (in their 20's) who would agree to everything you have said here ! Am I acting more of my age?! I wonder....

Anju Aunty,
Thank you for replying to my comment. I agree with you completely. Parenting is a ball-game totally out of my league :)

But yes, young boys & girls, who are still forming a personality of their own, might succumb to these easy-way-outs and indulge in something, for which they are neither old nor mature enough to take responsibility for. And a good example of this is teen pregnancies, which are ever so increasing in the west, due to lack of parental supervision and such easy-way-outs.

Please do keep visiting & commenting, and most importantly blogging, as you write really well :)

Hello Mam,
*The sudden panic of finding oneself pregnant after a quick session of sexual satisfaction has just vanished from the minds of over enthusiastic, over stimulated young couples. There will be no moral restrain on budding minds, no fear of society, no dread of parental discipline*
I dont understand the hue and cry created over the increased awareness and experience of sex among the youth of today. Sex is something real and personal. It is a gift to man from God(If you belive in one) and a part of human life. It is completely upto man to excercise restraint over it if needed and the society must only interfere if a sexual activity is obstrusive to its existense. (Obstrusive: A pothole on the road, loud music, traffic stopping celebrities, a baraat on the road). It is just like eating, sleeping and playing sport. We design better mattresses, better racquets and invent new dishes. Sex will exist and it should be popularised in India as a human right. If you can pay for it, then enjoy it.
Yes we must be concerened about HIV. We must also be concerned about, overspeeding and road rage.Speed thrills and kills. Every teenager who does it knows that. HIV is on similar lines.
I write this on a very secular mood. I am avery spiritual person and belive in chastisity before marriage due to religious reasons.

While reading your blog i still remember scene from movie "Khwaish", where actor is ashamed to walk up to medical store and ask for condom. and its true for many of us.
First thing is lack of awareness.
Second thing is society pressure.
I still wonder when are we going to come out of this. Can we just not ask for what we want, and which is better. Why others need to raise an eyebrow.
